I just read my old “About me,” and realized how outdated that is, especially because I’m 25 and not 25. So let me tell you a bit about the 25 year old me, seeing as she’s pretty different that the 24 year old one.

I am a journalist, a writer, a cook, a baker, an adventurer and I guess you may say a free spirit.

I grew up on Vancouver Island, in a suburban community with an odd name that most out-of-towners can’t pronounce. I was in French Immersion, which meant I was bonded to a group of people for 13 years. Many of those people are still my friends today (it’s hard to shake some people after that long.) My parents are in the health care industry, mom’s a nurse, and my dad is the guy who takes your blood late at night (no, he’s not Dracula, or for those of you who don’t know who that is, Edward). I had a great childhood, and was fed well.

The minute I graduated high school, I wanted out, but unfortunately I didn’t have the foresight to save for university, so I stayed in Victoria and went to the University of Victoria. The feeling of wanting to escape and experience something new never faded, and before I even attended my university graduation, I was living in Vancouver.

For four years, I lived in there. During that time, I ate, cooked, and baked a lot. That’s when this blog began. I started putting what I made and thought about food, on to cyber-paper. I’ll admit that at times I’m not the worlds greatest blogger. I don’t always blog on a regular basis, sometimes I forget to take pictures of my food, and I don’t always remember the recipe for what I made. But I try, I really do.

Vancouver helped me realize who I am. I met so many great people and experienced so many amazing things. And most importantly I ate some of the most amazing food. I tried to take advantage of everything Vancouver had to offer, especially when it came to food. I really learned how to cook during that time, I learned that I could cook, and not just to get food in my belly, but to put smiles on peoples faces, and happiness an my heart. I even applied to culinary school during that time. It was around the time I applied for journalism school. And when I was accepted to both, I made a pros and cons list. Journalism won.

The last year was a blur, I can’t really remember a lot of what happened. I know I spent a lot of time in front of a computer, took a lot of pictures, interviewed a lot of people, drank a lot of rum, and spent a lot of time drooling over Bruce Springsteen’s ass with my roommate. I also cooked a rabbit for Easter.

Since then, I worked for the CBC, I had a freelance article published on a salt maker, I moved back and forth between Victoria and Vancouver a few times, became a baker for a bit, and I made the big decision to pursue rural life.

I recently moved from the city, to the mountains. From Vancouver to the Rockie Mountains. I live closer to Alberta than I do to the ocean, which I’ll admit disturbs me slightly. But I can see the majestic mountains from my backyard and, well, from virtually every spot in town.

But moving to a small town from a big city, is always a bit of culture shock, especially for a foodie! If you are a foodie in Vancouver you know what I’m talking about; almost everything you could ever want produce, and ingredient wise is available to you in Vancouver. There is a bounty of ethnic food markets, there is the Granville Island Market, sausage shops, cheese shops, farmers markets, endless amounts of local produce, bread, and other great products. It is a cook’s dream.

This blog is on a new journey as a experience my new home, and as I cook new food bound to the constraints of small town, mountain living, and of course my G.I. Diet.

I’m looking forward to sharing my adventure with you!
